How to Increase Your PC Performance

As you use your computer more and more over the years, your computer tends to run slower, freezes frequently, and at times, you may also encounter the alarming “Blue Screen of Death” that can stall your system.

Just like your car, you need to do maintenance and tune up on your computer regularly to keep it running efficiently.

Follow these tips below to increase your PC performance and prevent crashes:

(1) Fix the System Registry Errors

The Windows Registry is the collection of data that your computer has accumulated during its operations. All the updates, installation and uninstallation of applications, and other daily activities get logged into the Window Registry.

Some of these data and information are no longer required by your computer. However, all these left over entries and empty spaces can clutter and corrupt the Registry, causing errors and makeing it less efficient.

The best and most significant way to increase your PC performance is to use a Registry Cleaning program to clean up the Registry. A registry cleaner scans for errors in your Windows Registry such as ActiveX Entries, DLL issues, Empty Registry Keys, Runtime errors, Outlook and Outlook Express Errors, EXE errors, Svchost errors and a wide variety of other system issues.

Best Windows Registry Cleaner Program

Per my research, the two best Registry Cleaner Programs are Registry Easy and Registry Fix. These two programs have a vast collection of error fixers and some excellent utilities to make your computer run more efficiently. They even comes with programs to manage your start ups and defragment your disk.

They are very easy to use and does a great job of scanning the registry for errors, repairing the errors, and making your computer run faster.

My PC is now running much faster ever since I deleted these useless entries in my Windows registry and fixed all the errors. Remember to make a backup of your Registry before you do the cleaning.

Download the Registry Easy Now and get your PC scanned and repaired now.

(2) Remove temporary files with Disk CleanUp - Run once a week

Each time you browse at web pages, your computer can pick up and store temporary files. Over time, the accumulation of these files can decrease your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup to get rid of these useless files. Doing this will free up tons of hard drive space on your computer.

To run Disk Cleanup:
  1. In your Start menu, click on My Computer.
  2. Right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors and click Properties.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, click Disk Cleanup.
  4. After the scan, the Disk Cleanup dialog box reports a list of files you can remove from your computer.
  5. After scanning is done, check and uncheck boxes to select files that you wish to keep or discard. Click OK.
  6. Additionally, you can click the More Options tab within the Disk Cleanup screen to look for applications you seldomly use. You may want to remove some of these programs if you no longer use them.

(3) Defragment Your Drive – Run Once a Month

Over time, the files in your computer become fragmented. Fragmented files lead to slower performance because your PC must now search for the file's parts and put them together in the correct order.

By defragmenting the files, this pieces the files back together, which helps to reduce the accessing time for the hard disk and help to increase your PC performance.

To run the Disk Defragmenter:
  1. In your Start menu, click My Computer.
  2. Right-click on the drive you wish to check for and click Properties.
  3. Click the Tools tab, and then in the Defragmentation section, click Defragment Now….
  4. Select the Volume at the top of the screen, and then click Analyze.
  5. After analyzing your computer, the Disk Defragmenter displays a message stating whether you should defragment your computer. Press Defragment to clean up your computer if necessary. The Disk Defragmenter will reorganize files by placing together and organizing them by program and size.
Note: This can take a few hours. You should run this over night.

(4) Remove Adware, Malware & Spyware and Virus

Computer viruses and spyware (software that stealthily collects information on your surfing habits and even your personal information) can wreak havoc on your system. You should definitely arm your computer with Antivirus and antispyware programs. Be sure to scan your computer often and remove those harmful virus and worms. Also, make sure you keep them updated!
  1. Antivirus programs - Two of the most reliable computer virus programs around are Norton Internet Security and McAfee Internet Security Suite.
  2. Antispyware programs - There are a few good ones to use here and they are free too. You should use them all. Windows Defender, Adware, Spy Bot, Spyware Doctors.

(5) Remove Startup programs

Long boot times frustrate the heck out of me. Sometimes, it seems like it takes hrs for your computer to boot up. The reason it can take so long is that each time your computer boots up, it has been instructed to load up a software applications.

If you have too many programs running in the background then this can dramatically slow down your computer. Except for the virus checker and firewall, you should remove the ones that are not necessary.

To disable programs do the following:
  1. Click on "START" then "RUN" (Or Windows key + R)
  2. Type "MSCONFIG" and click on "OK"
  3. Click on "STARTUP" at the top right hand side, now delete programs you don't need.
Here is a list of programs and services you dont need unless your are running a network. They are safe to remove from your startup configuration. The removal of these features will speed up your PC during the startup.
  • Alerter
  • Clipbook
  • Computer Browser
  • Fast User Switching
  • Human Interface Access Devices
  • Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
  • Messenger
  • Net Logon
  • Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
  • Remote Desktop Help Session Manager

Bonus Steps

Do the above steps and you'll have your computer running like a sports car. However, if you still need some extra boost, perform the steps below to get some extra boost for your PC.

(6) Reduce Visual Effects

Visual effects fading icons, drop down shadows, animated windows, etc. are fancy features that bog down the CPU. To further increase your Windows speed, disenable some of these options.

Here is how:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click System.
  3. Click on the Advanced tab
  4. Under Performance, Click Settings
  5. Under Visuals Effects, choose Adjust for best performance

(7) Cleaning your Desktop

Every time you boot up your computer, the operating system has to load the desktop items. The more items on your desktop, the longer it takes for your computer to boot up.

Therefore, you should not put heavy files and folders on your desktop. You should take care about cleaning your desktop for better computer performance.

If you do all of the above steps, you will see dramatic increase in your PC performance. No need to call a computer tech anymore!
